Dharma and Therapy in Service of the Heart's Release

Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy w/ Individuals, Couples, Families

Jonathan is on sabbatical from his psychotherapy practice,

and will remain so for an indefinite time period. He is more than

happy to make referrals for those seeking a psychotherapist.

I am currently Marriage and Family Therapist Registered Intern #75470 employed at HAART (Humanistic Alternatives to Addiction Research and Treatment), a clinic specializing in opioid replacement therapy. I am also co-founding editor of the Journal of Holistic Psychology, an annual print publication that supports the ongoing dialogue between ancient and modern wisdom traditions.

In addition to my theoretical and clinical training, my years of practicing and teaching mindfulness meditation have trained me to see, be with, and to effectively address suffering both in myself and countless others. My interest in and study of the relationship between psychotherapy and meditation has served my own growth well - it is my wish that this familiarity might assist those that feel so inclined.

ABOUT YOU

I currently do not know a thing about you, except that your life and life circumstances are unique - they are also likely complex in the way that human lives can often be. I also know that the only person that can be you is you, and that if I am curious about the many nuanced self expressions that you have at your disposal, that I might just be able to support you in a way that is actually helpful, and that may even be exciting to you. I’m curious to find out who you are, and together to discover any hidden capacities you may have for greater freedom, and for expanding upon your options as to how you choose to live.

I regularly see clients having the following experiences: anxiety, fear, depression, anger, various addictive behaviors, social difficulties, chronic pain or illness, various traumas, internet and technology addiction, loss and grief, death in the family, obsessive thought patterns, family conflict, self esteem issues, spiritual matters, PTSD symptoms, impulse control difficulties, substance use concerns, ADHD, compulsive behaviors, relationship conflict including marriage endings, general feelings of isolation, existential and midlife crises, parenting issues, needing relationship support, and various sexuality matters including addiction and compulsivity.

In addition to the above list, I honor the great complexity of the human experience and thus work holistically - surely your unique situation is not nearly as clear or simply as such a list may suggest; together we will work to unravel some of that complexity so that healing can occur and your truest self can more easily and fully emerge.

"To specify is to objectify;
to objectify subjectivity is to
destroy its very nature."

'THE REAL WORK'

It may be that when we no longer know what to do

we have come to our real work,

and that when we no longer know which way to go

we have come to our real journey.

The mind that is not baffled is not employed.

The impeded stream is the one that sings.

--Wendell Berry

MY COMMITMENT & PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

Fundamental to my therapeutic orientation is an acknowledgment that we are all interconnected in some beautifully supportive way.  At certain times, and if a client so desires, our work may be more specifically informed by my training in the areas of Buddhist meditation, classical yoga, and both Eastern and Western philosophies.

"It takes two to speak the truth - one to speak and another to hear."

--Henry David Thoreau

JFK University Holistic Studies

I earned my Masters Degree in Holistic Counseling Psychology from JFK University - my studies focused primarily on integrating the practices of meditation, therapy, embodiment, and conscious relationship into my own life and work. My clinical orientation is centrally rooted in a mindfulness-based perspective. Generally speaking, mindfulness is a means by which we can more directly and honestly experience our lives – it is our own continuously unfolding capacity, intention, and way of meeting our experiences in any given moment.

DESCRIPTION OF SESSIONS

Sessions are 50 minutes. Our efforts together will focus more readily on moving ‘towards’ health, fluidity, and integration rather than moving ‘away’ from illness, stagnation, and fragmentation – these latter expressions often dissipate when the former are nurtured. Witnessing and supporting you in your own capacity to self-heal is one of the greatest joys in my life.

"A person's experience cannot be figured out by others,

or even by the person experiencing it.  It cannot be ex-

pressed in common labels.  It has to be met, found, felt,

attended to, and allowed to show itself."

--Eugene Gendlin from Focusing

ABOUT INSURANCE

Many therapy clients choose to not involve their insurance, as they wish to maintain personal privacy and thus do not want their treatment listed on their medical records. For my part, I do not bill insurance directly. However, I am happy to provide a billing summary at the end of each month for you to submit to your insurance company. In these cases, most clients are able to get partial or full reimbursement for my services. If you decide that you'd like to use your insurance in this manner, you may want to check with your plan in advance. Full payment for my services is due at the beginning of each session, and as previously stated, you may pay via cash or check.

CANCELLATION POLICY
